The three types of licence

  • Mandatory HMO licensing applies everywhere in England to larger houses in multiple occupation.
  • Additional HMO licensing is a council scheme that extends licensing to smaller HMOs in some or all of its area.
  • Selective licensing is a council scheme that requires a licence for privately rented homes in designated areas, even if they are not HMOs.
